Mallorca.

Located in the heart of the Mediterranean, the island is known for it’s sweeping vistas. But it’s not only a natural wonder—it’s the cultural hub of the Archipelago.

There’s the opera, the Ciudad de Palma Symphony Orchestra, the Museo de Bellas Artes and La Casa de Cultura, plus many smaller galleries, which all make for a vibrant artistic scene.

In the middle of all this is Brigitte Lucke: a professor, curator, photographer and writer.

After completing her Ph.D. in Art History from the University of Bonn she relocated to Mallorca and the island instantly became her home.

Combining the inspiration she derives from the landscape with her passion for the arts, Lucke’s photography captures the expressive movement of dance against Mallorca’s natural beauty. And she wants to share it with you.

Lucke literally wrote the book on contemporary art in Mallorca (Mallorca. Die Begegnung mit der Zeitgenössischen Kunst, 1990) so her knowledge of the island and it’s artistic community makes her an ideal point person for photographyMoves.

Lucke describes Mallorca as “a huge garden” that interact with the colors of the sea — in short, a dream location for photographers. Plus, her insider knowledge of Mallorca means she knows the island’s most inspiring hidden inlets.

Even with Mallorca’s exotic charms, Luck says “it’s the light which inspires generation of artists.”

The first visitors to Mallorca were artists and writers in the beginning of the 19-century who brought their impression of the great landscape back home. Now, like them, you can too.

Nature is always stronger than the human figure.

To keep the balance between the human figure and the background I use movement in clothes, hair, props and emotion. Or, I hide the figure to evoke some mystery.

Strong colour in costume can also help to provide contrast between the human figure and the landscape.

Gerry has only seriously taken to photography for a year now.

He participated in two of my workshops at Pikto Toronto, learning about lighting with a Canon 40d camera. He uses a 17-85 lens kit and borrowed a beautiful 85, 1.8 lens for this stunning shot.
